Plant Identification Apps
Apps are changing quickly—and probably more quickly than this website. If you have fabulous new one that should be listed here, do let me know!
Wildflower Apps
There are over 60 free wildflower identification apps. You can search for one that is specific to your area on the Wildflower Search Website:
General Apps
These apps are particularly helpful if you are NOT dealing with a wildflower, but, say, a tree, or a grass, or a fern, or a moss, or a lichen, or (gasp!) a mushroom.
Google Photos
is a helpful app for identifying all kinds of things, including plants, fungi, and insects. Sometimes I start there, then check the USDA plant database or one of my printed plant guides to make sure the identification checks out.
Seek by iNaturalist
allows you to post pictures of what you found and other people will weigh in on what they think it is.
And while we are here…………
Bird Identification Apps
- BirdNet is a marvelous app that allows you to record bird songs and identify what you’ve heard.
- Merlin Bird ID allows you to identify birds based on what they look like and where you found them. It’s also great for generating lists of what birds might occur where, in what habitat you’d find them, what they look like in different stages of their lives, and what kinds of sounds they might make.
